Cantor Zaher is the old cathedral cantor, not the cathedral cantor. The old cathedral is located in el faggala, rather than el 3abbaseya where the current cathedral is. The latter was built in pope Cyril VI's era. Hope this stops the confusion

I may not necessarily enjoy all of Albair's recording myself BUT i have a great great great deal of respect for him and the work he is doing for his Church. The re…
I completely understand fr. Peter's point. I agree as well tune is not everything but the Coptic church is not Coptic without her Coptic hymns and therefore it didn't matter at a time of weakening language and becoming more rare as a spoken language…

So what was the traditional means of passing on the knowledge of hymns before there were conventions and CDs and mp3s etc?

The move to draw Coptic nearer to modern Greek started in the 1850's and the earliest recordings of hymns were not until the 1900's when the damage had already been done. That novel dialect started to be taught in the newly established HIC…

According to what I know, you say them after the synaxarium. But again you can say them during t…
No Cyril97,
I disagree. Judging by what I listened from his productions (which is something I had enough of saying I disapprove of, but you may not know this) he actually plays with certain parts of the tunes like no other. Yes, cantor Ibrahim does,…
There may have been a doxology one day and forgotten about. But in the euchologion book of nahdet el kana2es there is a specific hymn at the end of the book
I'm aware of the book of Lambdin although as far as I can remember having skimmed through it in the not very recent past I had some reservations. I may be wrong though so I'll have another look. I'll also follow your advice and see if the book you m…
Yes that is right Fr. Peter. The manuscripts and the early writings by church fathers are mostly in Sa'idic, but Bohairic is used for the purposes of rites and prayers in the liturgy and midnight praises for example, used quite more recently (by rec…
Dear Aegyptian,
Obviously you have to understand that the church rites follow the Bohairic (and sometimes a mixture of Bohairic and Sa'idic with predominance of the former) dialect. Concerning your question:
[coptic]`P[C [/coptic](Lord) [coptic]ari`…
I guess the answer is yes. Sunday in Christianity replaces the Sabbath in Judaism. You must know that our rituals are very close to the Jewish traditions, and the reasons the former emanated from the latter does prove how the Orthodox Church (being …
DEar geomike,
Your point is a very valid one but I'm afraid it may give way to complacency. It's no excuse that the older generation don't have the time and they are choir leaders. They do understand that an integral part of deacon's job is to learn…
You are right Mina. Just maybe reminding myself that deacons/Sunday school teachers have a huge job on their hands and it's no good giving ourselves excuses all the time for not teaching some hymns for that matter
Dear jydeacon
Thanks for the clarification. I strongly agree with baladoos of course and a bit disappointed to hear what geomike said. God bless you all and pray for me a lot
I guess I can see a point in both arguments. Sunday liturgy is rather more complete with the celebration of the Lord's resurrection but not compulsory. Thinking of the UK in several places there may not be the opportunity to do a Liturgy on Sundays …
First of all: why the need for innovation? The psalm has been like that since the beginning, why did people decide to add to it. I can understand that in other rites there needs to be an addendum because of similarities in the tune, ie feast of the …
MY mistake I'm sorry. As for Cantor Zaher's hymns I guess his attempt at recording some "unrecorded before" hymns is admirable but his voice is not the greatest (the range of his musical notes) and the notes (hazzat) are not perfect. I like Cantor G…
NOt at all heretical but take it as you would this song "me first bearing leaves in Africa". Some syntactical and grammatical errors that may have been prevalent in slang Coptic at the time of composing. Better to preserve and have better insight th…
In addition my understanding is that Cantor Zaher serves in the old cathedral in el faggala and Cantor Gad serves in Alexandria but not sure which church.
Dear Coptic_deacon and father Peter,
I stand corrected. You both are right and my previous post was rather uninformed. Yes it does appear that Coptic Christians started praying the liturgies in Greek and then it was converted to Coptic and then agai…
DEar all,
Please don't forget we are Jesus' children. We pray for those who oppress and persecute us. Let's pray for all muslims alike may God stop their acts altogether
God bless us all and have mercy on us
Dear Father Peter,
Having read your post, I can say this is exactly what I meant. I may have misunderstood the first post, to which I disagreed, but I do agree completely with what you said in that last one. I think I am convinced with all of those …
